Job Summary and Mission
This job contributes to Starbucks success by enhancing and sustaining Starbucks Global Anti-Bribery and related third-party compliance initiatives including auditing and monitoring activities, supporting programs to ensure compliance with Starbucks Standards of Business Conduct. Promotes ethical behavior, facilitates proper decision-making, and provides Starbucks partners with the tools and resources to do what is right in any context. Models and acts in accordance with Starbucks guiding principles.

Summary of Key Responsibilities
Responsibilities and essential job functions include but are not limited to the following:
  • Assists in and implements anti-bribery and restricted party screening (i.e. OFAC) compliance initiatives.
  • Communicates the compliance program to all partners in areas of responsibility.
  • Prepares and delivers presentations to executives, managers and other partners about the compliance program.
  • Works with Communications partners to develop compliance-related communications for partners in assigned business units/departments.
  • Meets with various business units/departments to build relationships and enhance their abilities to support the compliance program.
  • Coordinates with attorneys, business units and departments to incorporate specific compliance issues into compliance training.
  • Implements programs to enhance compliance support for assigned business units/departments.
  • Monitors industry and regulatory developments, and makes compliance recommendations to the chief ethics and compliance officer.
  • Pursues continuing education to maintain knowledge of current ethics and compliance rules and practices.
  • Provides coaching, direction and leadership support to team members in order to achieve partner, business and customer results.

Qualifications

  • Compliance or a related function (5 years)
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to conduct independent research and analysis
  • Ability to make effective presentations
  • Ability to prepare written communications for internal audiences
  • Ability to understand legal material and recognize critical issues
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Management of international compliance operations
  • Subject matter expertise regarding compliance best practices to address obligations including 
    Foreign Corrupt Practices Act UK Bribery Act and restricted party screening regulations

Provides effective guidance and leadership to other paralegals and support staff in the Law and Corporate Affairs department. Models and acts in accordance with Starbucks guiding principles.

Summary of Key Responsibilities
Responsibilities and essential job functions include but are not limited to the following:
  • Manages routine and identifies and initiates non-routine legal tasks, both independently and as requested by attorneys. Informs attorneys of significant issues in a timely manner. Conducts factual investigation and recommends course of action to be taken. Conducts trademark searches, analyzes results, and drafts reports for attorneys and client groups.  Assists with the drafting and filing of trademark, copyright, and domain name applications.  Monitors third party infringements of Starbucks global trademark rights and helps coordinate Starbucks response.  Assists with the preparation of documents to be filed in foreign countries.  
  • Assists in hiring, training and advising other paralegals or legal support staff to ensure efficient and consistent conduct of company business. Provides leadership and support to other paralegals and legal support staff, and assigns tasks and projects. Offers guidance and ensures effective communication among staff members. Takes active leadership role in departmental projects and committees.
  • Directs outside counsel with minimal input from attorney to ensure timely and effective legal representation with minimal disruption to company business.
  • Identifies training opportunities. Develops and implements or supports the implementation of educational tools and programs for internal clients.
  • Manages moderately complex and complex projects or segments and phases of complex projects. Ensures that the project achieves the expected results within time and on budget. May direct the work of others. Completes periodic special projects relating to the intellectual property portfolio.
  • Develops and oversees maintenance of document and data management systems within the Law and Corporate Affairs department. Maintains a database of global intellectual property rights. Creates and maintains electronic records and physical files.  Responsible for maintaining and updating intellectual property docketing system.  Work closely with attorneys and paralegals to create reports.
  • Provides regular feedback and consultation to partners and appropriate departments regarding the status of legal projects.
  • Provides support and direction to internal business units according to assigned geographical region or area of expertise. Participates in cross-functional teams within the company. Meets independently with Starbucks business leaders as representative of the Law and Corporate Affairs department. Takes initiative to identify trends, issues, potential risks and liabilities. Proposes recommended action and implements resolution.
  • Maintains regular and consistent attendance and punctuality.
