The HSBC Algeria COO is positioned as a key role in the senior management layer within Algeria. The COO is responsible for driving the execution of Group and Regional strategies, understanding the impact on the customer
Accountable to the MENA COO and  Algeria CEO.
The HSBC Algeria COO is positioned as a key role in the senior management layer within Algeria. The COO is responsible for driving the execution of Group and Regional strategies, understanding the impact on the customer and business and prioritising transformation activity in order to mitigate any risks. The Algeria COO is responsible for ensuring the effective operations of the bank and driving the delivery of professional services to enable seamless bank operations. This role has accountability for ensuring Algeria compliance with all local regulatory requirements.
Lead
• Active and engaged member of the Algeria senior leadership team:
− Provide leadership within Algeria, driving the people agenda and role modelling the HSBC values. Active role in people leadership within Algeria
− Represent HSBC in Algeria with regulators, government, clients and other third parties. Protect the HSBC brand in Algeria by challenging behaviour that may expose the brand to regulatory, consumer or media criticism
− Represent Algeria across the HSBC Group
Direct
• Proactively engage with stakeholders across the Group COO Community, Global Business’ and Global Functions to ensure local needs are understood at Regional and Group level, informing the definition of strategy and Global Standards
• Identify any Group/Regional requirements which may impact Algeria compliance with local regulatory requirements, engaging with the necessary stakeholders to veto this activity
• Represent local Algeria interests in Group COO strategy definition and resulting initiatives, supported by the Regional COO
• Proactively drive Group COO strategy and objectives within Algeria
Transform
• Drive the transformation of HSBC in Algeria through the effective execution of (scope TBD) transformation activity
• Engage with Global Business, Global Function and HTS stakeholders to understand Global and Regional execution strategies and implementation plans
• Define Algeria specific execution strategy and implementation plans, understanding the impact on the customer and business operations in Algeria and prioritising transformation activity in order to mitigate any risks
• Drive implementation of applicable Global Standards in Algeria
• Ensure the effective mobilisation, resourcing, governance and delivery of (scope TBD) execution strategy and implementation plans
• Ensure transformation initiatives are fully embedded, creating sustainable change
• Lead and direct specified complex projects in Algeria, currently includes:
− The Organisational Effectiveness programme for the Algeria
Protect
• Engage with local regulators to understand current and future regulatory requirements on Algeria level business operations (scope TBD)
• Ensure Algeria compliance with all local regulatory requirements
• Ensure ongoing compliance with Global standards, policy and process wherever locally applicable
• Drive Operational Risk Management in Algeria
• Support ISR to ensure Algeria business continuity plans are regularly reviewed and approved
• Ensure effective governance structures and processes are in place across the Global Business’, Global Functions and HTS Functions in Algeria
Improve
• Identify opportunities to drive cost reduction, resulting in sustainable saves and achievement of cost targets. Execute in agreement with Group and Regional stakeholders
• Provide constructive challenge to existing practices/proposed initiatives and generate new and innovative solutions to address complex issues facing Algeria. Execute in agreement with Group and Regional stakeholders
• Apply external market knowledge, benchmarks and internal benchmarks and insights to identify opportunities to improve performance and practices. Execute in agreement with Group and Regional stakeholders
Drive
• Work in partnership with the CFO to manage the total cost base of Algeria; including setting,  monitoring and managing the budget for Algeria (TBD)
• Ownership of the direct costs under direct remit
• Control and oversee day to day operational activities within Algeria, working with Global Business, Global Function and HTS stakeholders to resolve any issues identified
• Work with Global Business, Global Function and HTS stakeholders to ensure effective implementation of timely, relevant and cost efficient end-to-end technology and operations solutions
• Manage HTS services received by Algeria in an efficient, cost effective and transparent manner through defining, monitoring and managing HTS service levels based on business requirements
• Team leadership and management of direct reports, including effective performance management, talent management and succession planning (where applicable)
Major challenges
• To manage effectively in a matrix organisation across diverse stakeholder groups
• To stay abreast of external developments in regulation, market trends and competitor activity within Algeria
• To respond to constantly increasing regulatory demands within existing capability and capacity constraints
• To maintain broad oversight of all Global Business, Global Function and HTS operations within Algeria
• To effectively deal with range of complex issues with conflicting and changing priorities
• To manage the balance between effective execution of  day to day operations and services, whilst driving a substantial transformation agenda
• To effectively manage the delivery of HTS services that do not sit within direct control of Algeria
• To operate in a reduced cost environment, driving the achievement of sustainable cost savings within Algeria
• To achieve the above whilst effectively ensuring that risk is well managed within Algeria
• To challenge the status quo with peers across the Global Businesses, Global Functions and HTS
Knowledge & Experience / Qualifications
The role holder will ideally have knowledge and experience in the following areas:
• Strong knowledge and understanding of the external environment within Algeria - regulatory, political, competitor and market
• Demonstrated knowledge of technology development and infrastructure and how this can be used to meet business needs
• Demonstrated business knowledge, ideally experience of leading a complex business unit within a global banking environment
• Practical experience of major business transformation with large scale project management experience
• To have held a senior leadership position, ideally within a global banking environment
• Ideally to have both front and back office experience within a global banking environment
• Financial and accounting acumen
• Ability to manage and mitigate operational risk effectively
• Experience of managing within a complex matrix environment
• Experience working across cultures
• Experience of managing and coordinating a dispersed team
• Understanding of the HSBC Group and its strategy, structures and processes
• Knowledge of HTS – functionally, operationally and financially
• Knowledge of French is a plus
