Context/Scope:
Red
Stripe trading as Denoes and Geddes Ltd is owned by Diageo PLC the
leading adult beverage business. Red Stripe as a part of its
sustainability strategy has embarked on the development of a sustainable
cassava starch supply chain; Project Grow. The establishing reliable
and high agricultural supply from local raw materials (LRM) is the focus
of the sustainability strategy. This will be done through setting up
farms and farming clusters directly or through third party suppliers. A
broad category of LRM crops will be considered among which are sorghum,
cassava, corn, millet, sweet potato, and ginger etc.
The
cassava farm is a vital linkage in the supply chain that requires sound
platform in F13 into F14 and beyond. Through best practices yields of
40-60t/ha are targeted at planting densities of 4,800-5,200 plants/acre.
The farm will provide the planting material to further expand to
acreage needed to meet Red Stripe’s destination 2016 vision of 20%
import substitution (requiring 1200 ac) with an ultimate target of 40%
(2,400 ac) by 2020.
Purpose of Role:
Effectively
oversee and manage the Red Stripe farm and outsourced farm production,
together with the Agribusiness Development Lead (ABL) engaging the key
stakeholders, creating and developing plans and executing these
brilliantly to develop a sustainable LRM supply chains.
Key Outputs:
· Lead
the implementation of the 36 acre pilot cassava farm and training in
the first and second phase of the project to deliver clear range GMO
free cassava cultivars with attention to all elements such as yield and
price. Forecast and plan the agro-production and expansion of the pilot
from 36 acres up to 300 acres, then 2,400 acres. Identify and plan the
cover crops and farm plots to meet the LRM extract requirements
· Oversee
and manage the contracts in place with CARDI, AIC, RADA and any other
agencies associated with the farm in order to achieve and exceed scope,
objective and service levels agreed.
· Plan,
implement, develop and operate farm (owned and third party), cultivar
germplasm and nursery development & works closely with stakeholders
to make decisions that balance the long-term objectives and short-term
financial targets. Supervise farm workers and coordinate with third
party farmers in delivery of farming KPI’s for supply of LRM. Work
closely with CARDI, RADA, AIC and other agencies to ensure farm
operational communications are brilliantly executed and consistently at
each farm plot daily.
· Maximize
the effectiveness/ROI of all farming activity. Pro-actively challenges
costs, sustainability activities and highlights opportunities. Track
activity performance against agreed KPIs
· Support
the ABL in the delivery of the broader LRM portfolio projects as
required e.g. in feasibility studies, pilots and market surveys.
Qualifications and Experience Required:
· Degree educated in Agronomy, Engineering, Sciences, Management or Social Sciences.
· Ideally at least 2 years’ experience in farming, cassava cultivation experience.
· Strong communication skills – both written and verbal.
· Full
appreciation of the priorities of agribusiness development and
understanding the market dynamics, agronomics and upstream and
downstream needs of the supply chain.
· Proven ability to create, deliver and execute farming production plans – including full KPI tracking.
· Proven experience of full budget management.
· Proven ability to apply farming best practices and technology.
· Strong agronomy and financial acumen.
· Excellent project management skills & ability to get into the detail
· Proven ability to manage multiple projects and execute them all brilliantly.
· Ability to influence at all levels especially supply chain teams and senior management.
· Passionate
& enthusiastic with proven ability to inspire & motivate others
to deliver excellent results (both internal cross functional teams and
